The Dig

A podcast about the politics of race, sexuality, class, and other things that matter.

Appropriation (for our purposes, this will generally refer to cultural appropriation): the adoption of elements of one culture by members of a different cultural group, specifically the use by cultural outsiders of a minority, oppressed culture's symbols or other cultural elements -Wikipedia (which is not a super-academic reference but which had the clearest definition as of 10:30 PM on 1/7/15)

Bias (Race, Gender, etc): Prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair

Bisexual (adj): Sexually attracted to both men and women

Cisgendered: Denoting or relating to a person whose self-identity conforms with the gender that corresponds to their biological sex; not transgender

Class: The system of ordering a society in which people are divided into sets based on perceived social or economic status

Code Switching: Speaking differently according to one's audience or environment. We all do this, but people of color are accused of "acting white" when they do it. You know how you don't say "fuck" around your grandma or boss? You're code switching. -Alexis

Colorblind: Regarding race, this isn't a thing. Shut up. -Alexis

Ethnicity: The fact or state of belonging to a social group that has a common national or cultural tradition

Gay: (Of a person, especially a man) homosexual, sexually attracted to people of one's own sex

Gender: The attitudes, feelings, and behaviors that a given culture associates with a person's biological sex. Behavior that is compatible with cultural expectations is referred to as gender-normative; behaviors that are viewed as incompatible with these expectations constitute gender non-conformity. (American Psychological Association)

Gender Identity: One's sense of oneself as male, female, or transgender. (APA)

Inter-sexed/intersexual: Relating to or having the condition of being intermediate between male and female.

Lesbian (adj): Of or relating to homosexual women or to homosexuality in women

Privilege: A special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group of people

Queer: An umbrella term for sexual and gender minorities that are not heterosexual or cisgender (Wikipedia 1/7/15)

Race: Each of the major divisions of humankind, having distinct physical characteristics (I don't care for this definition. OED needs to get itself together. -Alexis)

Transgender: Denoting or relating to a person whose self-identity does not conform unambiguously to conventional notions of male or female gender.
